Why use a hydraulic hand pump?

Manual power is simple, instant and inexpensive. Use manual hydraulics for a simple job like pumping up a small hydraulic cylinder, pressure testing a system or dispensing fluid. It might not be worth investing in an electric or air driven pump. Maybe there are no electric or air services on site, or your manual hydraulic pump is providing that invaluable emergency or standby power.

We manufacture a large range of pumps for different applications and duties. Talk to us about your application.

What type of hand pump do I need?

We cover most variations. Let’s cover basic hand pump types as terminology is everything.

Our entry level product is a wide range of single speed hydraulic hand pumps.

There are single acting single speed pumps that generate pressure only on stroke and pull in fresh fluid on the other. Our MC, MT, MFX ranges amongst others are single acting.

There are double acting single speed hand pumps that generate pressure on both the up and down strokes. Watch our video to see the difference between single and double acting hand pumps. The MW series is double acting, amongst other pumps.

Basic versions of either our single speed single acting or single speed double acting pumps will be for operating single acting cylinders or pressure testing/dispensing/charging. You have one outlet port and one hose.

Either of the single speed pumps can be supplied with Double Acting directional control valves to provide two outlet ports for operating a double acting cylinder or actuator. If somebody talks “double acting”, check what they actually need. Watch our video to see the difference between single and double acting cylinders and how the hydraulics operate.

Finally, a different type of hand pump that we also manufacture is a Two speed hand pump. They are invaluable in certain applications, for example where the system volume is large but the maximum pressure is also high. Two different hand pumps are integrated into one body. Watch our video to see how a two speed hand pump works. Look whether a single speed pump will meet your requirements then learn more about Micropac two speed hand pumps. Our two speed units can be supplied for single acting cylinders and testing/dispensing charging or with double acting four way directional valves for double acting cylinders and actuators.

Do I need a hydraulic reservoir for a hydraulic hand pump?

The answer is yes. You need some sort of supply of oil. Even a double acting ram needs a reservoir for the hand pump, as you need to “make up” the rod volume.

For small volume systems, we have three families of pumps that have reservoirs built in. This simplifies a system. The MC pump is truly sub miniature and has a 20cc in built reservoir with a 175mm screw on option. Our low corrosion marine PMP pump has a 500cc integral reservoir. Our MPM single and dual speed pump modules have 50cc or 115cc sealed oil reservoirs.

Our larger displacement pumps can be supplied mounted on reservoir. The MP portable pump range have various options on portable carry-around reservoirs or trolleys. Fixed reservoirs up to 50 litres are offered as an option on the MW series single speed pumps.

You may be able to feed your hand pump from the hydraulic system. This is normal practice on the MT cartridge pumps and MQ CETOP pump, but the inlet can be piped up using rigid tube or a flexible hose on other models. Keep in mind the need to have an un-constricted and clean oil supply. Often, fitting the pump to its own reservoir is a sound design choice. This allows you to easily bleed the system and circulate fluid round back to the reservoir before use. You can be generous with your fluid volume. In contrast, hand pumps with small integrated and maybe even sealed reservoirs are more sensitive on fluid volume. You will need to be careful to refill a reservoir after bleeding and before putting the equipment into use.

What hydraulic hand pumps are in our Micropac single speed range?

Sarum Hydraulics are the hand pump specialists and have been manufacturing their Micropac MW series hydraulic hand pumps for 40 years. These rugged hand pumps are cost effective and offer a long service life with pressures up to 700 bar. Four-way directional control valves are offered for double acting operation.

The Micropac MW-A Alloy and Stainless Steel unit with a carbon steel handle mechanism offers a well engineered hydraulic hand pump, with good corrosion characteristics and wide fluid compatibility. Four models from 12cc/407 bar through to 100cc per double stroke/50 bar. We offer optional fixed reservoirs.

Look at our Micropac MW-3 316 Stainless Steel hydraulic hand pumps for the high external corrosion resistance and protection for wetted parts even with challenging fluids. Five models from 7cc/700 bar through to 100cc per double stroke/50 bar. We offer optional fixed reservoirs.

Additionally, the Micropac MR Hydraulic Reservoirs are compatible with all of these manual hydraulic hand pumps and are available in anodised alloy or 316 stainless steel.

Buy the MW series pump on a reservoir as an integral test or pumping set as our MP series. One part number describes a unit that is ready to use out of the box.

For an exclusively 316 stainless steel and polymer manual hydraulic pump with unmatched corrosion resistance, look at our Micropac MU Hand Pump.

Specify our MB series drum and low pressure pump for high flows and all 316 and polymer wetted parts.

Our MT Cartridge Hand Pumps and MQ CETOP Manifold Pumps are both low cost hydraulic solutions compatible with industry standard manifolds for easy fitting and integration into your existing hydraulic system.

MG series pumps offer enhanced corrosion resistance for punishing work environments.

Our PPS series hand pump provides a component hand pump in 100% 316 stainless up to 400 bar for piping into 316 stainless systems. Threaded connections of Swagelok/A-Lok.

Our MFX single speed single acting hand pump offers a rugged single speed low pressure pump to 50 bar. This is a specialist OEM hand pump.

Our MPM single and dual speed pump modules offer a very useful OEM pump module having a small sealed hydraulic reservoir, a release valve and a relief valve all in a very small space envelope. Pressures up to 700 bar and inbuilt reservoirs of 50cc or 120cc on mineral oil.

Our MC unit offers a miniature OEM 400 bar integral pump/reservoir complete with a hold/release valve and relief valve. For use on mineral oil.
