Marine and subsea hand pumps are used in the most punishing environments and are often safety critical. Whether it is a subsea actuator or a backstay tensioner on a yacht, the user simply doesn’t want a pump that is seized up the day they need it to work. Marine conditions are harsh and need engineering that addresses them. And often at the right cost. For example, subsea valve actuation pumps or a diving bell door pumps just have to be dependable and easy to use. Hand pumps are non- electric and either provide emergency standby for powered systems or power their own hydraulic system where manual hydraulics is the perfect simple solution. Every application is slightly different and has its own key requirements without compromise. What is a marine duty hand pump and what isn’t it?
As noted, it is a hand pump that isn’t seized up or corroded the time you need it. You may only need it once in a while. A marine hand pump isn’t necessarily massive and a total over kill on materials. You may opt for a lot of 316/1.4404 stainless steel or sound engineering may offer other solutions for low mass, small space envelope and lower cost.

The world uses our pumps in marine applications for good reasons. Different users have very different needs.
Do I really need a 316 stainless 1.4404 hand pump?
What have you been asked for and what does the application actually need?
Is epoxy coating of a carbon steel pump an alternative to stainless steel?
Yes, to a point, but there are challenges. Epoxy coating of a cheap pump is widely used but has significant limitations.
Can I use a bellows covering the handle mechanism and piston rod to keep out the environment?
Yes, potentially but it is complicated. We use a moulded bellows on certain OEM pumps to cover just the piston rod and bearing. That is also keeping dirt and contamination out of the unit. We have never seen any success with having a special bellows made for a pump handle and rod so it can operate through a slot or in isolation with a bellows over the lot. Beakbane were always the specialists on fabricated bellows and indeed more mainstream rubber. There must be success stories as you see them on military equipment, but at a cost. We are much more tempted to use a handle shaft from the side of the pump and hide the mechanism away behind seals. Our long standing PSP pump runs with a similar handle shaft arrangement to the Tangye Hydrapak and indeed medical “lifters” where only the shaft is visible. Our MPP panel pump and miniature YM marine unit enhance the 316 stainless shaft with a fluid seal into the body. The YM adds the useful benefit of single handle control for pumping and releasing. You simply pull the handle back to release pressure, dispensing with a separate release/hold valve.
How can I achieve 100% 316 stainless facing the marine environment without using an expensive all stainless steel hand pump?
We would say this is achievable with some design flexibility. It is a challenge. It is only the parts that the operator uses that must be 316 stainless, can other hand pump parts be manufactured in carbon steel or anodised aluminium alloy? That could offer a substantial saving.
Why would I require 100% 316 stainless 1.4404 wetted parts in a hydraulic system?
There are very specific reasons why you would run with 100% 316 stainless 1.4404 in a system and more specifically in a marine system. This is a different question to materials facing the weather. Here we are talking about the system itself.
What is special about a submersible hand pump?
Micropac pumps have been used for decades in subsea applications. Again, application is everything.
What are the requirements of a hydraulic hand pump for a yacht or watercraft?
Other than the simple requirement of doing the job, we would say that a pump that isn’t corroded when it is needed is a massive requirement. Cost is also a big driver as is mass/space envelope. Our Micropac pumps have been used on yacht applications for a long time.
